Interior Design

Opening May 2027

When John Ritchie Findlay built Number 3 Rothesay Terrace in 1876, he created a house for living, working and entertaining, filled with carved woodwork, stained glass and rooms made for gathering. Nearly 150 years later, we have invited one of Britain’s most admired designers to write its next chapter

Ben Pentreath and his studio are designing the interiors of The Bonham Townhouse with a single aim: to create a house that feels as though it has always been loved and is ready to welcome guests again.

About Ben Pentreath

Ben Pentreath is one of today’s leading voices in traditional architecture and interior design. He founded his London studio in 2004 and now works across towns, buildings and interiors. In 2023, he received the Richard H. Driehaus Prize, the highest honour in classical architecture, and in 2026 he was made an OBE for services to design.

Ben’s books English Decoration, English Houses, and An English Vision have made his relaxed, layered style known worldwide. The connection to the city runs deep: Ben studied Art History at the University of Edinburgh, and the townhouses of the New Town and West End have long informed his thinking.

The Bedrooms

We designed each of our 29 bedrooms as a room in a private house rather than a hotel room. Expect the qualities that define a Pentreath interior: considered colour, confident pattern, and furniture with character, set against the building’s original proportions.

High ceilings, tall sash windows and period detail are kept and celebrated. Around them, Ben’s studio layers soft, natural textures, antique and bespoke pieces, and artwork chosen for each space. The result is calm and comfortable, made for rest after a day exploring Edinburgh.

Behind the traditional look is everything a modern stay requires: deeply comfortable beds, beautiful bathrooms, and thoughtful touches that make each room easy to live in.

Respecting a Remarkable House

Number 3 Rothesay Terrace is one of the West End’s finest Late Victorian houses. Its carved colonnade, Abbotsford-inspired Library, and the zodiac ceiling of the Rothesay Room are an important part of Edinburgh’s heritage.

We have planned our renovation with care. Rather than imposing a new style on the building, Ben Pentreath’s design responds to it by restoring what is original, repairing what’s been lost, and bringing a fresh, warm sensibility to the rooms in between.
